Senior Scientist – Maritime Systems (REQ 308)
Overview:
Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to contribute to the success of our Maritime Systems Division. Ideal candidates will have an MS, or PhD, with a background in subsea technology, acoustics, sonar signal processing, autonomous systems, and an understanding of Navy technologies and operations.
Successful applicants will support the analysis of a cutting-edge acoustic system through development and production. In this role, a successful candidate will engage in the analysis of large oceanographic data sets to inform important design decisions and improve overall system performance. Additionally, this role will include automation of system tests and management of a growing acoustic database. This position provides opportunities for professional growth and advancement to project leadership.

Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Support ocean-acoustic modeling and simulation
- Support design and development of complex undersea acoustic systems
- Support development, management, and execution of a number of ongoing and future programs pertaining to areas of innovative maritime systems.
- Conduct scientific analysis of at-sea experimental data and produce technically accurate reports.
- Lead preparation of, and contribute to, multidisciplinary proposals related to developing novel maritime technology solutions.
- Lead cross-functional teams to address complex system design challenges, while satisfying rigorous design requirements.
Required Skills and Attributes
- An MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, or a related technical discipline, preferably with 5 or more years of related engineering experience. Exceptional entry-level candidates will also be considered.
- Knowledge of acoustic beamforming with an understanding of detection and contact tracking theory.
- Experience with digital signal processing, with expertise in MATLAB and a working knowledge of Linux based systems.
- Experience supporting and partnering with senior technical staff to develop innovative technology solutions that meet customer/user needs.
- Ability to technically contribute to and lead a variety of complex technical tasks at a detailed level.
- Excellent communication and interaction skills with project managers, IPT leads, and customers.
Preferred Skills and Attributes
- Experience leading engineering teams in a research and development environment.
- Strong understanding of the defense industry, particularly undersea or maritime technology
- Experience in one or more of the following: C++, Python, SQL
- Active security clearance
