Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is seeking an Ocean Engineer Intern for a part-time internship supporting several engineering projects and programs across our company. Successful applicants will be highly motivated, innovative, self-starters with strong mechanical, technical, and problem-solving skills, and will be enrolled in a certified degree program working towards a BS/MS/PhD in Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering or another closely related degree.

APS works on exciting, technically challenging, research & development programs where multidisciplinary teams work closely to address difficult national security needs. This position will allow applicants to collaborate with subject matter experts and make meaningful contributions to project teams and their objectives. It will give applicants exposure to all parts of the R&D process, from first-principle analysis through to prototyping and testing of integrated systems.

This position will be responsible for supporting senior engineers with a variety of engineering tasks from design and development to assembly and testing of complex maritime systems. A solid working knowledge of fundamental engineering tools (mechanical and electrical CAD software, analysis tools such as MATLAB) is required as well as standard office software skills (e.g. Microsoft Office). Enthusiasm or experience with hands-on field-testing with marine equipment and/or on the deck of a ship is desired. A successful applicant will possess good technical, problem solving, and communication skills, and they will be mentored by a professional engineer.

Tasking may include:

• Assist in the design, analysis, and engineering of advanced prototype systems
• Assist in the fabrication, assembly and laboratory testing of systems
• Assist project teams with pier-side testing and at-sea testing opportunities
• Assist in general facilities management, warehouse and shop organization, and maintenance and inventory of shop tools
• Packaging parts and equipment, preparing and managing shipments

Required Attributes and Skills:

• Experience with mechanical and electrical CAD Software
• Knowledge of oceanographic sensors and systems
• Knowledge of ocean measurements and instrumentation
• Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
Desired Attributes and Skills:
• Knowledge of ocean and wave mechanics
• Experience with corrosion and corrosion control techniques
• Hands-on field-testing experience
• Working experience on a ship
• Knowledge of underwater acoustics – propagation physics, noise sources, modeling and simulation, SONAR equation, underwater transducers, and acoustic measurements
• Knowledge of engineering calculation tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, etc.)
• Experience with microcontrollers (i.e., Arduino, Basic Stamp, Raspberry Pi)
• Knowledge of software programming languages (e.g. JAVA, C#, C++, Python)
