Senior Scientist – Sonar Signal Processing (Req 313)

Overview:

Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is seeking a highly motivated Sonar Signal Processing Engineer to join our growing team. This role offers visibility into cutting-edge R&D initiatives and the chance to influence the direction of next-generation signal processing solutions. The ideal candidate will be a technically curious engineer who is energized by learning new concepts and brings deep expertise in signal processing and a passion for solving complex technical problems. They will contribute to the design, development, and evaluation of advanced algorithms, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to transition innovative concepts into real world capabilities supporting critical U.S. Navy programs. In addition to contributing technically, this role offers the opportunity to guide and mentor junior engineers – sharing knowledge, shaping the next generation of technical talent and fostering a collaborative learning culture.

Join a dynamic R&D environment where engineers and scientists from multiple disciplines collaborate to tackle complex national security challenges. Our close-knit organization offers the agility of a small company while valuing technical expertise, operational excellence, and innovative thinking. You’ll have the opportunity to take initiative, contribute new ideas, and see your work directly support meaningful, mission driven outcome.

Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and optimize signal processing algorithms for active/passive sonar (beamforming, matched filtering, CFAR, DOA/TMA, adaptive noise cancellation, multi-target tracking, clutter suppression, reverberation mitigation)
  • Develop array processing architectures (planar, conformal, towed arrays) including beamspace, subspace, and adaptive techniques (MVDR, LCMV, etc.)
  • Construct and validate end-to-end sonar performance models (SNR budgets, reverberation-limited regimes, ROC analysis)
  • Decompose system requirements, create processing architectures and interfaces, and support design reviews (SRR/PDR/CDR)
  • Provide technical guidance, peer reviews, and design leadership; set best practices in signal processing and embedded optimization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate signal processing components into embedded, real time, or distributed sonar systems
  • Plan and execute lake and sea trials, conduct acceptance testing, analyze test logs, and iterate designs based on findings
  • Validate algorithms through simulation, lab testing, and data analysis, ensuring alignment with system requirements and operational use cases
  • Define processing requirements & interfaces for real-time and embedded pipelines; collaborate with firmware/software for implementation
  • Support sensor/array selection, transducer parameters, and front-end analog/digital chain trades (sampling, dynamic range, quantization)
  • Document and present results to various peer-review and working groups

Required Skills and Attributes

  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or Signal Processing
  • Five or more years of relevant experience
  • An understanding of and demonstrated proficiency in the areas of sonar signal processing, such as detection and estimation theory, digital signal processing, probability and statistics, spectral analysis, communications, and underwater acoustics
  • Demonstrated experience presenting program updates, analyses, or technical material to sponsors, customers, and technical working groups
  • Occasional travel required, typically less than 10%
  • Active security clearance or the ability to obtain one (Secret or higher)

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Prior experience with algorithm development, implementation, and analysis for complex signal processing applications.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, C/C++, Python
  • Experience with Target Tracking & Detection Theory
  • Gitlab or similar experience
  • Experience in machine learning techniques applied to signal processing
  • Familiarity with embedded system constraints (latency, power, quantization) at a requirements and design-analysis level
  • Experience supporting the development of technical proposals and related documentation
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing real-world acoustic or sonar data
  • Has the ability and willingness to participate in occasional at-sea test events
